Day 153 – Practicing God’s Presence.

Unless otherwise stated, all the scriptures used are taken out of the New King James Version of the Bible.

Reference Scripture:

“Then he said to Him, “If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here.”
‭‭Exodus‬ ‭33‬:‭15‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

No one is better qualified to teach us about the value of God’s presence than the man Moses. He had seen first hand what God’s presence meant for him and the children of Israel when God used him to deliver about 3 million Jews from 430 years of slavery in Egypt.

When God approached Moses on Mt. Sanai and gave him the task of returning to Egypt to deliver his fellow Jews from slavery, Moses’ initial reaction was “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?””
‭‭Exodus‬ ‭3‬:‭11‬ ‭NKJV‬‬. Moses had left Egypt while running from Pharaoh for killing an Egyptian and had remained at large ever since. He had his reasons to doubt himself in being the right candidate to be used by God to deliver the Jews. However, God soothed Moses’ fears by promising him “I will certainly be with you. And this shall be a sign to you that I have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.””‭‭Exodus‬ ‭3‬:‭12‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Every reason that Moses raised as to why he wasn’t the right candidate to deliver Israel, was invalidated by the fact that God Himself committing to be with Moses. Moses finally did accept the challenge and God, as He had promised Moses, backed up Moses by performing a ray of miracles that brought the mighty empire of Egypt to it’s knees and forced Pharaoh to emancipate the Jews. Moses experienced first hand that it wasn’t his education, his physical ability, or his oratory skills that enabled him to deliver Israel, but rather that it was God’s presence.

It was God’s presence that caused miracles in Egypt which finally broke the iron will of pharaoh and caused him let the Jews go free. It was God’s presence that divided the Red Sea and later on River Jordan for the children of Israel to walk on a dry ground as they fled from Egypt. It was God’s presence that gave the Jews bread called Mana from heaven and potable water from the rock. It was God’s presence that caused the clothes and shoes of the children of Israel not to wear out for the 40 years they wondered and sojourned in the wilderness (Deut. 29:5)

Experientially, Moses came to rely solely on God’s presence to do each and everything for him that at one time he told God “If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here.”Exodus‬ ‭33‬:‭15‬ ‭NKJV‬‬.

So, how does an ordinary person cultivate being in God’s presence? A believer can cultivate being in God’s presence by being in His word. Read the following account recorded in Luke when Jesus visited the house of Mary and Martha:

“Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.” And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.””
‭‭Luke‬ ‭10‬:‭38‬-‭42‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

From the above scripture, we learn that Jesus valued Mary’s fellowship with Him over Martha’s being busy for Him.
